Overview

Accommodation at Shark Bay divides into two locations: Monkey Mia itself (resort-style, right on the dolphin beach) and Denham (25 km away, more choice and lower prices). Both are viable bases. Staying at Monkey Mia means walking to the dolphin experience; staying in Denham is cheaper and gives you access to the broader Shark Bay area without driving past the resort. Book ahead in April–September. This is prime season and the resort fills months ahead.

Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort

The only accommodation at Monkey Mia itself. A resort complex with rooms, chalets and powered caravan sites, a pool, restaurant and direct beach access to the dolphin experience area. Chalets from around A$250 per night; caravan sites from A$50. Booking directly with the resort is often cheaper than online platforms. Being on-site means being first on the beach for the 7:45am dolphin briefing.

Denham accommodation

Denham (26 km from Monkey Mia) has several caravan parks, a handful of self-contained holiday units and two small motels. Shark Bay Caravan Park and Denham Seaside Tourist Village are the main caravan options. Self-contained units at Shark Bay Cottages and Ocean Centre Hotel offer comfortable base for exploring the broader World Heritage Area. Expect to pay A$120–180 per night for self-contained units.

What to know

  • Peak season (Apr–Sep): Book 2–3 months ahead for Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort. Denham is easier to book but also fills.
  • Summer (Nov–Mar): Extreme heat. Some visitors avoid Denham in January–February.
  • Fuel and supplies: One petrol station in Denham with higher prices. Stock up in Carnarvon (270 km south) for a longer stay.
  • 4WD camping: Francois Peron National Park has bush camping sites for self-sufficient 4WD travellers. Permit required from DBCA Denham.
